Floyd Mayweather’s eight-round fight against Logan Paul, a YouTube star, saw outstanding moments from the five-division world champion. His 2017 fight with Conor McGregor had similar publicity, even though it was a professional match.
Floyd Mayweather earned around $250 to $300 million for his fight with Conor McGregor and almost $65 million for the bout with Logan Paul.
The boxing matches were profitable for Paul and McGregor, too, netting them around $100 million and upwards of $30 million, respectively.
Paul’s match with Mayweather was the third in a row for the controversial YouTuber, after two fights with another YouTuber, KSI. Moreover, while McGregor is a professional martial artist, Paul only had one professional boxing match before facing off against Mayweather.
Only 28 out of 217 (13%) of Logan Paul’s blows landed, while McGregor managed to land 111 out of 430 (26%).
Mayweather is the best defensive boxer in history, and that clearly showed in both fights, but particularly in the second one. Only 28 of Paul’s punches managed to connect; seven were jabs, and 21 were power punches.
McGregor fared better in his 2017 fight with Mayweather, and threw significantly more punches than Paul, despite fighting for only two rounds longer. Out of McGregor’s 430 blows, 111 connected. The Irishman was more accurate with power punches, too, making 83 hits.
Mayweather managed to hit Paul 43 out of 107 times (40%), and McGregor 170 out of 320 (53%).
Even though he retired from professional boxing, Mayweather still lived up to his reputation by barely getting hit in both matches. He also landed 30% more blows than Paul, despite making half as many attempts as the YouTuber. The boxer was criticised for his bout with Paul, but defended his decision to participate by stating: “They say ‘it’s not all about the money.’ Well, your kids can’t eat legacy.”
The match, covered by major online betting sites, finished with a tie and left most viewers unsatisfied. On the other hand, the viewership numbers showed a clear audience interest for this type of fight.
